Marrakech is not for everyone! It is an assault on your nose, hearing and sight. Thousands of people use the souk everyday, as customers and sellers and if you a bit claustrophobic, this might not be the place for you. Crossing the road is a clash of personalities, yours and the drivers. However, it is a city like no other and if you love history and cultures, this is the place where to appreciate North Africa and Muslim culture (Music, art, crafts, fashion, etc etc). I have been coming here again and again, and I believe that Marrakech is the best place to get a taste of a complete exotic culture just round the corner from Europe.
I love the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. It’s both raw and sophisticated, depending on where you are. So many fabulous restaurants and especially roof top bars. The souk is fun to see and get ready to bargain but it does get quite annoying to be constantly hassled to buy something. The carpet sellers are not funny to deal with. My advice is don’t start a conversation unless you are serious about buying. History, architecture are stunning . Easy to walk around. Recommend a guide to show you around. Favourite restaurant was le jardin du lotus, totally hip restaurant with great DJ. Best lunch roof top place was el Fenn
I love Marrakesh as a destination, there are so many sides to the city, and now on my fourth trip I feel like I am still getting to know it. The medina / old town is just one part ot the city to explore so make sure (if you have time) to also check out other parts of the city, the new town, L'Hivernage / Gueliz, there are so many beautiful, peaceful places for a chill pool day about 15 - 20 mins outside the centre.
The highlight is experiencing the life and bustle of the Medina. Overall an excellent experience and we felt safe walking around. People are generally friendly and most can speak some English Be aware that people recommending a berber market which 'today is the last day' are trying to lure you to their own shop or cooperative where you may be pressured to buy especially if it's in the tannery area. So be aware of this before you agree to follow someone's directions
A fantastic journey that is unforgettable to every sense you have. It can be abit overwhelming on day one. As marrakech is a labyrinth of markets and alleys etc. The noise, hustle of market folk, smells and colours attack you in every corner in a mysterious way. Just read your body, and take plenty of breaks for fluids and dont feel that saying "no" is rude. The hustle is part of the day to day live of the retailers. Do your homework on prices as most items can be found for under 100 dhm in local currency. So dont rush into making purchases. Remember though to tip alittle. For you a dollar/euro etc is nothing to you but for these people is it. So don't haggle on silly small items but do know the price and add a mini tip as a token of good wishes. As you will find many of the same items in one medina to another. Do avoid the big tourist diners. As you will get a nice roof top view. But will pay a premium. Go to the medina street food alley where you will pay 60 durum for a meal for two people rather than 160+. Better food and if the locals are eating the produce it local and authentic. Know somw basic words to greet, hello and no and thanks yous. A few basics greeting go along way for the locals. Advise to plan your trips in advance from get a guide as local vendors can be abit less reliable. There are horror stories of not feeling safe and pickpocketing but not once did i feel unsafe. The people are cool andno request is too big. Enjoy
I loved the colors, textures, aesthetics of this city! It’s all about the vibe, and this city has it all. The food is amazing, shopping is abundant, it’s a feast for the senses. The people of marakkech are wonderful and friendly, just lovely to be in a culturally vibrant and rich city, I loved everything about this place and can hardly wait to return! There’s so much to do and see, hope to come back often.
